Different types of online yoga businesses
-
Diversified Yoga Studios: Online Yoga Studios which have diversified their business to online video section. It is a promising strategy as these studios already have a place to film, qualified teachers, and the knowledge to provide high-quality videos.
-
Online Yoga Only: Websites providing only online yoga such as The Yoga Collective, Ekhart Yoga, Gaia,
My Yoga Works, Yoga Glo. That includes websites that also offer free online yoga videos such as
Do Yoga With Me.
-
Online Fitness Businesses with Online Yoga: Businesses where online yoga is only one of many deals among online pilates, weight loss exercises etc. such as Cody and Booya Fitness.
-
YouTube Channels: Monetized online Yoga Video channels through YouTube mostly ran by individuals with a high monthly revenue trough AdSense such as Yoga With Adriene, usually with more than a million subscribers.
Why users prefer online Yoga Classes
To save time
Convenience of not going to the gyms or In person classes
Safety and Hygiene (especially during pandemic)
No time or space constraints
I love to practice Yoga. But the nearest In-person Yoga Class is 8 miles away. I end up wasting a lot of time
I feel extremely awkward to practice on an online video sessions. and placing the devices is quite complicated!
I often miss my sessions when I run late for work.
Design Process
Research
Before diving into my research, I created a research plan to define my research goals and to outline the different methodologies I would use. By doing this, I was able to conduct my research with a clear direction and purpose.
I started with conducting market research to get familiar with the general online Yoga and Meditation Classes as well as available Yoga and Meditation Apps. Through my market research, I was able gather information that helped me understand what the online courses comprise of and who they are made for.
Here are some key findings from my research:
User Interviews
A foundational research was carried out on 5 users between the age group 18-60. The goal of the research was to prioritize the user and putting the user front and center.
I conducted user interviews, which I then turned into empathy maps to better understand the target user and their needs. I discovered that users face a lot of limitations while scheduling a workout either at a class or online. They find it frustrating to travel to the classes after work or feel awkward attend a video session online. Building a customizable self operated platform where users can plan and workout or meditate at their own pace at their own comfort level can motivate them to take care of their physical and mental well being.
User Pain Points
Geographical location
It is very frustrating for users with unpredictable work schedules to come back home and then travel again to a Yoga class.
Awkward video sessions online
Users find it awkward to attend video sessions online with a trainer because they are not comfortable with their body showing off.
Missed Workouts
All the in person and online classes are scheduled as per a timetable and if the users happen to miss the timing, they end up missing the class.
Research Conclusions
Based on the different interviews conducted, I narrowed down the insights into 3 basic user needs I wanted to address
-
An inexpensive, quick moving enterprise that’s hassle free for the user
-
An organized User flow where you can quickly customize a Workout Routine
-
A fully Customizable workout Routine considering time and Physical constraints.

Wire framing
Roadblocks
A lo-fi prototype was tested conducting a Usability study. I learned that users faced limitations such as not being able to choose a Set the Timer or problem logging in. In the user experience I solved these problems by adding a sliding timer for easy input and also reworked the login page.
Final screens: Mobile app
Considering accessibility
-
Used Icons to help make navigation easier for the users .
-
Used headings with different sized text for clear visual hierarchy
-
The color palette contrast ratio met the WCAG standards
-
Included detailed voice assist for those who are visually challenged.
